In the Bible, trust and fear are presented as inversely related: as trust in God grows, fear decreases. We move from fear to faith. However, we are also told to fear the Lord, and such fear is the beginning of wisdom. Could we be dealing with two different kinds of fear? The fear of the world and the fear of the Lord? I think that is the case, and it is primarily the fear of the world I want to focus on first. We are surrounded by those types of fears: wars, lawlessness, hantavirus and other deadly diseases. Trust functions as the antidote to this kind of fear, with Psalm 56:3 acting as a core verse: "Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You." Fear is seen as an inevitable human emotion, but it should not govern life; instead, it is a prompt to rely on God’s protection, strength, and presence.
Key Aspects of Trust and Fear in the Bible:
Trust Overcomes Fear (Faith over Fear): Trusting in God serves as a refuge, protecting believers against fear and anxiety. The Bible often connects fear to a "spirit of fear and timidity," which is countered by the power, love, and self-discipline found in trusting God.
Fear as a Trigger for Reliance:
The Bible suggests that fear is a natural, often necessary, emotion that alerts people to danger. However, rather than giving in to panic, this fear is meant to prompt a pivot to trust in God’s control and care.
"Fear Not" and God's Presence:
Commands to "not fear" are frequently coupled with promises of God’s presence, such as "for I am with you" (Isaiah 41:10,). These promises are intended to anchor trust in God’s character rather than in circumstances.
Distinction Between Types of Fear:
Fear of Man/Circumstances: This is considered a "snare" or trap that restricts trust and leads to anxiety.
Then there is the wisdom of fear of the Lord:
This is distinct from terrified fear and refers to a healthy, respectful awe of God's power and authority, which actually strengthens trust.
The Role of Love: "Perfect love drives out fear," meaning that a mature, deep understanding of God's love removes the fear of punishment (1 John 4:18).
Key Verses:
Psalm 56:3-4: "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You."
Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding."
Isaiah 12:2: "I will trust and not be afraid."
2 Timothy 1:7: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.
