Only God is Eternal

Dr. Sean McDowell has done a fascinating interview with neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Egnor. I am including it below - along with a comment I left on the video. Here is my comment:

Fascinating interview, but here is where Dr. Egnor loses me. Even though it was an excellent explanation of the soul, there is a problem imposing Greek philosophy onto Biblical theology. They are not compatible, and God condemned adopting the beliefs of the surrounding nations and called it adultery (e.g., Deuteronomy 18:9-14). The Scriptures warn us about such syncretism. Aristotle (De Anima) and Aquinas (Summa Theologica) may have argued that the spirit is eternal, but the Bible says only God is immortal, (1 Timothy 6:15-16).

Only God is eternal. If only God is eternal, then no part of man ever was. Ecclesiastes 12:7 tells us that the spirit returns to God who gave it, so God's spirit is where we get our spirit from, but it returns to God. Even if spirit is eternal, the verse strongly implies that it belongs to God alone (to give and take as He wills).

As I have written in my book Gehenna Revisited and in posts here at my blog, I am very bothered by the influence Greek philosophy has had on Christian doctrine. I think that is a grave error, and its influence is everywhere - especially in the mistaken view that the human spirit is eternal. That is not a Biblical teaching. It comes from Greek philosophy, and I reject it completely.

Just as a side note, why do people choose AI thumbnails that make them look stupid? Shocked is one thing. Stupid is another. Neither of these men are stupid, but the thumbnail is.
